White House glimpses ‘light at end of tunnel’ on Ukraine
US President Donald Trump is actively promoting talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky as part of the “next phase of the peace process,” Leavitt said during a Tuesday briefing.
“Before President Trump’s victory last November, there was no end in sight to this bloodshed,” she remarked. “Now, there may finally be light at the end of the tunnel and an opportunity for lasting peace.”
Leavitt described last week’s Trump-Putin summit in Alaska as “very productive,” noting that several key points were agreed upon, paving the way for further negotiations. On Monday, Trump hosted Zelensky along with European NATO leaders to discuss next steps in the process.
In a Fox News interview, Trump urged Zelensky to “do what he has to do” and “show some flexibility” to reach an agreement with Russia. Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, say Moscow remains ready for talks that ensure a permanent, stable peace and safeguard the legitimate rights of all states and peoples in the region.
