Russia, Ukraine Conduct Another Swap of Soldiers’ Bodies

(MENAFN) In a renewed effort under the Istanbul accord, Russia and Ukraine carried out another exchange of soldiers’ remains on Tuesday, according to Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.

Medinsky, who also serves as Moscow’s lead negotiator in discussions with Kyiv, stated that Russia transferred the bodies of 1,000 deceased Ukrainian troops. In return, Ukraine repatriated the remains of 19 Russian soldiers.

The transfer is part of ongoing implementation of the agreements reached during the second round of negotiations in Istanbul on June 2. During those talks, both sides committed to a comprehensive swap of the seriously wounded, ill prisoners, and troops under 25 years old, along with the repatriation of fallen soldiers’ bodies.

After the final round of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine on July 23, Medinsky reported that Russia had already returned the bodies of 7,000 fallen Ukrainian soldiers and was prepared to hand over an additional 3,000.

This latest exchange underscores the continuing, if limited, cooperation between the two nations amid a brutal conflict now deep into its third year.
