Trump Backs Initial Russia, Ukraine Talks

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are currently "in the process of setting up" a one-on-one meeting.

Trump emphasized that he prefers to observe how the two leaders manage the discussions before he potentially joins the negotiation efforts himself.

During a phone appearance on “The Mark Levin Show,” Trump expressed his opinion that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine should meet independently at first.

“I thought it would be better if they met without me, just to see. I want to see what goes on. You know, they had a hard relationship, very bad, very bad relationship. And now we’ll see how they do and, if necessary, and it probably would be, but if necessary, I’ll go and I’ll probably be able to get it closed,” he commented.

Trump continued by saying, “I just want to see what happens at the meeting. So they’re in the process of setting it up, and we’re going to see what happens.”

His remarks suggest a watch-and-wait strategy while diplomatic developments unfold.

Earlier, Trump welcomed Zelenskyy along with leaders from European nations and NATO at the White House on Monday.

Their discussions centered on the next phases in international efforts to bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict to an end.

After these sessions, Trump also reached out to Putin via phone.

“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself," he stated in a message posted on his social media site, Truth Social.
