Trump views Ukraine peace agreement as road to heaven
Speaking by phone with Fox News on Tuesday, shortly after hosting talks in Washington with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, European leaders, NATO officials, and the European Commission, Trump reflected on his recent Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his broader mediation efforts.
“If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed... I want to try to get to heaven, if possible. I’m hearing I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole,” Trump said. “But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”
The president described the Ukraine war as “the toughest” among the “seven wars” he claims to have helped resolve during his career, stressing his desire to arrange a Putin-Zelensky meeting while pressing Kiev to show “more flexibility.”
Trump has also repeatedly argued that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation work. Earlier this month, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev endorsed his candidacy, citing his role in brokering peace between their countries.
When asked if Trump’s comments about heaven were made in jest, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted: “I think the president was serious. I think the president wants to get to heaven – as I hope we all do in this room as well.”
