Witkoff Says Russia Almost Made Early Concessions
On Tuesday, Witkoff spoke in an interview with FOX News, revealing that Russian officials quickly made adjustments during the first meeting.
He emphasized that determining Moscow’s willingness to be more “accommodating” played a crucial role in securing these early concessions, though he did not provide specific details.
According to Witkoff, the Anchorage talks were centered not on a short-term ceasefire but on striving for a lasting peace agreement.
He pointed out that “we stayed there for quite some time because we actually made progress on how we might get to a peace deal,” adding that temporary ceasefires are easier to violate due to lacking essential elements.
Witkoff further mentioned that President Trump began to realize that many foundational elements required for a peace accord had already been agreed upon.
“The president began to sense in this meeting in Alaska that we had a lot of the precursors agreed to for a peace deal, so why not pursue an entire peace deal?” he noted.
The peace initiative gained momentum following the Alaska summit and was further advanced by a subsequent gathering on Monday.
That follow-up meeting involved Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders, and was held in Washington, marking a significant step toward a comprehensive resolution.
