Texas Democrat Defies GOP Rules, Spends Night at State House

(MENAFN) A Texas Democratic lawmaker made a bold stand on Monday by choosing to spend the night inside the state House rather than comply with new Republican-imposed restrictions, according to media.

State Representative Nicole Collier rejected the recently implemented mandate that Democrats must be escorted by law enforcement to move freely, resulting in her overnight stay at the Capitol.

This incident unfolded as Texas House Democrats returned to Austin after a two-week absence. The lawmakers had fled the state to block a quorum on a controversial Republican redistricting proposal designed to add five new congressional seats favoring Republicans.

Upon their return, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows enforced strict controls on Democratic members’ movements. Under the new rules, Democrats are required to secure written permission and accept law enforcement escorts if they wish to leave the House floor before the chamber reconvenes Wednesday morning.

While most Democrats complied and displayed their “permission slips” to reporters, Collier stood apart by refusing to follow these conditions. This refusal restricts her from leaving the state Capitol without supervision and limits her to visiting her office only under law enforcement watch.

Sharing her protest visually, Collier posted on the social platform X a photo showing herself resting on the floor with pillows and blankets, captioning it: “This was my night, bonnet and all.”

Governor Greg Abbott called a special legislative session on Friday to push through the redistricting plan but was thwarted by Democratic tactics. He quickly announced a second special session, which could extend up to 30 days.

Democrats agreed to return only after the conclusion of the first session and the release of California’s new congressional map, intended to counterbalance Texas Republicans’ redistricting efforts.

In response, California revealed its proposed map Friday, which would grant Democrats five additional congressional seats in the heavily Democratic state.
