Japanese PM Ishiba Signals Readiness to Step Down
(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba issued another apology on Tuesday following the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) recent defeat in the House of Councillors election, addressing mounting pressure for him to resign. Speaking at the LDP’s joint general assembly, Ishiba acknowledged the situation but did not commit to an immediate resignation.
"My duty is not to evade responsibility, but to make the proper decision at the proper time," Ishiba declared, emphasizing his readiness to step down if necessary.
During his remarks, Ishiba outlined key policy priorities including achieving wage growth that outpaces inflation, tackling tariff negotiations, boosting economic strength, and reforming agricultural policies such as rice subsidies, according to media.
Following the party’s official review of the election results, the LDP will initiate the process to determine whether an extraordinary presidential election is required.
