Palestine Applauds Belgium's Move to Recognize Statehood
(MENAFN) Palestinian authorities expressed approval on Tuesday regarding Belgium’s recent decision to officially acknowledge Palestinian statehood during the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly sessions.
Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, revealed early Tuesday that his nation intends to support the recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN meetings scheduled between September 8 and 23.
This declaration places Belgium among a growing number of countries considering similar steps at the global forum.
In a public statement shared via the American social media platform X, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry praised Belgium’s “intention to recognize the State of Palestine.”
The ministry described the action as “consistent with international law and the UN resolutions, protecting the two-state solution, and supporting the achievement of peace.”
Palestinian officials viewed this as a meaningful contribution toward the resolution of the long-standing conflict.
The ministry also appealed to additional governments to “quickly initiate this recognition,” while urging them to enhance tangible efforts aimed at halting what it described as acts of “genocide, displacement, starvation, and annexation.”
They called for the creation of a genuine political process to bring an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Belgium's decision coincides with similar announcements from nations such as France, the UK, Canada, and Australia, all of which have indicated intentions to recognize Palestinian statehood during the same UN assembly.
These countries join the ranks of 147 others that have already extended official recognition.
Foreign Minister Prevot additionally mentioned that strict penalties are currently being enforced against the Israeli administration.
Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 63,500 Palestinians in Gaza.
The ongoing conflict has left the region in ruins and suffering from widespread hunger.
