Three ministers, governor get sacked by S. Sudan
(MENAFN) South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Monday removed three ministers and the governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal state in his latest Cabinet reshuffle, according to reports.
In a series of decrees read on the state-owned broadcasting service, Kiir dismissed Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Wek Mamer Kuol, appointing Joseph Geng Akec as his replacement. In another decree, Mary Nawai was named Youth and Sport Minister, taking over from Akec.
A third decree saw Kiir remove Nawai from her role as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, replacing her with Kuol. The fourth decree dismissed Emmanuel Okello, governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal, and appointed Sherif Daniel Sherif in his place. Taban Abel Aguek was also replaced as deputy commissioner general of the South Sudan Revenue Authority by John Malek. No reasons were provided for the dismissals.
Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, the oil-rich nation has faced civil conflict following a fallout between Kiir and his deputy Riek Machar. The 2018 power-sharing agreement has faced multiple challenges, but the peace deal grants the president the authority to appoint and dismiss government officials at both national and state levels. The president may only remove officials from other political parties with the consent of that party’s leadership.
