Scott Bessent Signals New Sanctions on Russia
Bessent expressed these views during an exclusive discussion with Fox News, when questioned about possible actions against Moscow.
“(Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, since the historic meeting in Anchorage, since the phone call, when the European leaders and (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy were at the White House the following Monday, has done the opposite of following through on what he indicated he wanted to do. As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign,” Bessent remarked.
He added, “So I think with President (Donald) Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week.”
After his summit with Putin in Alaska on August 15, Trump announced he would determine within “two weeks” whether any advancement could be made toward resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. At the same time, he suggested the possibility of sanctioning Moscow.
Trump also cautioned that a lack of progress might result in “massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed a news agency in a post-summit interview that while President Trump retains the ability to enforce new sanctions, doing so would signify the “end of the talks.”
