Turkey hails decision to dissolve Minsk Group
(MENAFN) Türkiye on Tuesday welcomed the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) decision to dissolve the Minsk Group, a mediation body formed more than 30 years ago to address the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Karabakh.
“We welcome the decision taken by the OSCE Ministerial Council on Sept. 1, 2025, regarding the dissolution of the Minsk Group and its affiliated structures,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Calling it “one of the significant milestones in the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Türkiye described the move as a historic step made possible through the joint efforts of both countries.
Created in 1992 with Russia, the United States, and France as co-chairs, the Minsk Group failed to deliver a lasting settlement. Azerbaijan had long demanded its disbandment, tying the issue to progress toward a formal peace deal with Armenia.
The decision followed an Aug. 8 summit at the White House, where Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held talks hosted by US President Donald Trump. Their foreign ministers later submitted a joint request to the OSCE to formally close the group.
Türkiye, a steadfast supporter of Azerbaijan, framed the dissolution as a crucial step toward sustainable peace in the South Caucasus.
