Trump says Zelensky will ask again for Tomahawks missiles

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has said that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is expected to request American-made Tomahawk cruise missiles during their meeting scheduled for Friday, according to reports.

When asked at a White House press briefing on Tuesday whether arms deliveries would be on the agenda, Trump responded, “I know what he has to say. He wants weapons. He would like to have Tomahawks. Everyone else wants Tomahawks. We have a lot of Tomahawks.”

Earlier, Trump had stated that the US might consider supplying the long-range missiles to Kiev if the conflict in Ukraine “is not going to get settled,” acknowledging that such a move would represent “a new step of aggression.”

Tomahawk cruise missiles can reach targets up to 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) away, potentially giving Ukraine the ability to strike deep inside Russian territory, including Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any transfer of Tomahawks to Ukraine would signal a “new stage of escalation.” He emphasized that “using Tomahawks without the direct involvement of American military personnel is impossible,” adding that such a move would undermine recent diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington rather than change the course of the war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has voiced similar objections, claiming that Kiev cannot be relied upon to use advanced Western weaponry responsibly. Kremlin officials have repeatedly accused Ukraine of using Western-supplied arms to carry out deliberate attacks on civilian targets.
