U.S. Army Launches Janus Program
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll officially introduced the Janus Program—an ambitious new project focused on providing secure and mobile nuclear energy solutions for army missions worldwide.
The announcement was made during the annual conference hosted by the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), marking a significant step in military innovation.
Driscoll emphasized the Army’s leadership in adopting transformative and forward-thinking technologies. "The US Army is leading the way on fielding innovative and disruptive technology," he declared, highlighting the service’s commitment to maintaining an edge in emerging sectors.
The unveiling of the program was done in collaboration with Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Jeff Waksman, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Environment.
In his remarks, Driscoll further stressed the Army's commitment to streamlining processes and developing future-focused capabilities.
“We are shredding red tape and incubating next-generation capabilities in a variety of critical sectors, including nuclear power," he said, underscoring the strategic importance of nuclear energy.
Energy Secretary Wright also spoke at the event, asserting that the United States should possess a dominant position in energy innovation.
He noted, "because energy is not one sector of the economy. It’s the sector of the economy that enables everything," suggesting that energy superiority translates directly into national strength.
Back in May, President Donald Trump had issued an executive directive that instructed the Department of Defense to formalize efforts to utilize nuclear technology within military environments.
The order, named “Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security,” mandated the Pentagon to "commence the operation of a nuclear reactor, regulated by the United States Army, at a domestic military base or installation no later than September 30, 2028." This move aims to cement nuclear power as a vital asset for national defense.
The Janus Program signals a transformative era in military logistics and energy deployment, with the potential to reshape how power is supplied in complex operational settings.
