Three officers get murdered during eviction operation in Italy

(MENAFN) Three members of Italy’s Carabinieri were killed and more than a dozen others injured in a powerful explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy during a court-ordered eviction, according to officials. Prosecutors believe the blast was intentional.

The incident took place early Tuesday in the town of Castel d’Azzano, located in the province of Verona. The property had been occupied by three siblings in their sixties who had reportedly resisted multiple eviction orders. The trio, formerly involved in farming and cattle breeding, had moved into the abandoned building roughly a year ago and were said to be struggling with financial and mortgage problems. Reports indicate they had previously threatened to ignite gas cylinders if eviction was attempted.

Authorities said the explosion occurred as officers entered the two-story structure to carry out the eviction. The blast completely leveled the building, trapping several officers beneath the debris.

Emergency crews worked for hours to recover victims from the rubble. Thirteen people—including police officers and firefighters—were hospitalized with burns and fractures.

Investigators believe the farmhouse had been deliberately packed with gas cylinders before the authorities arrived. Preliminary evidence suggests one of the occupants ignited the explosion, causing the structure to collapse.

Two of the brothers were pulled from the wreckage alive and taken into custody, while their sister—suspected of triggering the blast—was later found in a cellar. One of the brothers reportedly attempted to flee but was arrested shortly after.

The Verona prosecutor’s office has opened a case for premeditated homicide, citing indications that the explosion was planned in advance. Prosecutor Raffaele Tito said the suspects would be questioned later on Tuesday and noted that a mass murder charge was also under consideration. Forensic teams are analyzing traces of gas and what appear to be improvised incendiary devices recovered from the scene.
