Polish army says its jets blocked Russian aircraft over Baltic Sea

(MENAFN) Polish military jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea earlier this week, the Polish Army announced on Wednesday.

In a statement posted on X, the army said a Russian Il-20 aircraft had been detected operating in international airspace without a flight plan and with its transponder switched off.

"On October 28, 2025, a pair of on-duty MiG-29 Air Force fighters successfully intercepted, visually identified, and escorted a Russian Federation aircraft out of the area of responsibility," the statement said, confirming the plane was flying over the Baltic Sea.

Officials added that the Russian aircraft did not enter or violate Polish airspace.

The interception comes amid heightened regional tensions following several reported airspace violations in recent months. European governments have accused Moscow of being responsible for drone incursions into their airspace—allegations the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.

Tensions escalated after a September 9 incident when roughly 20 drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale Russian strike on Ukraine, prompting NATO jets to conduct joint patrols with Polish forces.

Neighboring NATO members, including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, have also reported similar airspace breaches in recent weeks.
