US capture of Maduro highlights Trump’s rising use of military threats
On Saturday, US forces carried out a “large-scale” raid in Caracas, detaining Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flying them to the United States, where they are expected to face criminal charges in New York. Reports citing Venezuelan officials indicate that roughly 80 people were killed during the operation. Following the raid, Trump pledged to temporarily assert American control over the country, including deploying US troops if necessary.
Since returning to the White House last January, Trump has repeatedly issued warnings and threats toward multiple countries, citing concerns such as national security, drug trafficking, domestic unrest, and competition with China and Russia.
Shortly after taking office, Trump renewed calls for US control over Greenland, the world’s largest island and a self-governing territory of Denmark that is also a NATO member. On Sunday, he reiterated that Greenland is “so strategic” and claimed that Russian and Chinese naval activity around the island makes US control essential for national security.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.” He further argued that American oversight of Greenland would benefit broader Western security, claiming that the EU “needs us to have it.”
Greenland has been an autonomous Danish territory since 1979. In response to Trump’s remarks, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged the US president to cease such threats, asserting: “The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom.”
Trump’s actions in Venezuela and his continued statements about Greenland reflect a broader pattern of the US president leveraging military and strategic pressure to assert influence globally, raising tensions from the Americas to the Arctic.
