Lightning Claims Nine Lives in Rwanda

(MENAFN) On Sunday, lightning struck a group of 15 individuals in Rwanda’s eastern region, leaving nine dead and the remainder injured, according to local reports.

The event unfolded in the evening within the Jarama Sector of Ngoma District, situated in Rwanda’s Eastern Province.

The victims were agricultural workers who had sought refuge from rainfall after tending to their fields. Eastern Province Governor Pudence Rubingisa informed a broadcaster that the wounded were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility.

Specialists emphasize that lightning incidents occur frequently in both eastern and western Rwanda, largely due to the nation’s landscape and geographical features.

Authorities advise precautionary measures to reduce risk during thunderstorms, such as moving indoors quickly, avoiding shelter beneath trees, not using mobile phones, disconnecting electrical devices, and installing lightning rods.
