Trump Pursues Purchase Agreement for Greenland

(MENAFN) Marco Rubio briefed legislators Tuesday that President Donald Trump is pursuing a purchase agreement for Greenland with Denmark rather than preparing for an armed takeover, according to reporting from media.

During the confidential session, the US Secretary of State downplayed possibilities of forcible seizure, media reported, referencing sources with knowledge of the discussions.

Senator Lindsey Graham characterized the administration's Greenland strategy "is all about negotiations," noting that America requires "legal control and legal protections" to warrant infrastructure development and American personnel deployment in the territory, the report stated.

However, White House officials indicated Tuesday that Trump's team was evaluating a "range of options" for obtaining Greenland, with military deployment among the possibilities under consideration.

"President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it's vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated when responding to question asked by media.

"The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief's disposal," Leavitt added.

The comments followed Trump's ongoing push to secure the Arctic island for strategic interests.

Following Saturday's US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in President Nicolas Maduro's capture, Trump reiterated his position on Greenland acquisition for "national security" purposes.

"We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it," he had said when asked about any potential US action against Greenland.

The autonomous Danish territory has consistently refused any sovereignty transfer proposals to Washington.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged Trump to "stop the threats."
