Yemen government forces advance toward Aden amid rising tensions

(MENAFN) Government troops aligned with Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council began moving toward the southern city of Aden on Wednesday, according to reports from Saudi outlets, as political friction in the region intensifies.

State-run media indicated that units from the Nation’s Shield Forces were dispatched to Aden, which serves as the country’s interim capital.

This move came shortly after the Southern Transitional Council (STC) announced that its chief, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, remained in Aden carrying out his responsibilities.

Al-Zubaidi had recently been expelled from the presidential council on accusations of high treason, following his faction’s takeover of the eastern provinces of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra. Government forces reclaimed control of those territories earlier in the week.
