Brazilian President in India for AI Summit, Modi Talks

(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva touched down in New Delhi on Wednesday, kicking off a five-day state visit that will see him attend the AI Impact Summit 2026 and hold pivotal bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official statement.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the arrival via the US social media platform X, noting that Lula will participate in the India-AI Impact Summit alongside his diplomatic engagements. The two leaders are scheduled to meet formally on Saturday.

Jaiswal said President Lula's visit will "impart strong momentum to India-Brazil partnership."

The spokesperson further emphasized the depth of ties between the two nations. "India and Brazil share a close and multifaceted relationship, elevated to Strategic Partnership and rooted in a common global vision, shared democratic values and commitment to inclusive growth," he said.

Lula's visit, running February 18–22, arrives against a backdrop of strengthening economic and geopolitical alignment. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $12.54 billion in 2024 — a figure that reflects nearly eight decades of diplomatic engagement dating back to 1948, when formal ties were first established.

Both nations are current members of the BRICS bloc, which India holds the chair of this year, adding further strategic weight to the summit-week encounter between the two emerging-market heavyweights.
