French Police Officer Gets Charged with Homicide After Fatal Shooting
The incident occurs Wednesday evening in Valenciennes, when officers respond to a neighbor’s call reporting the man shouting, “Call the police.” On arrival, authorities find the 31-year-old inside his apartment yelling “Help” in a disorderly setting.
According to prosecutors, officers attempt to subdue the man, who injures one officer’s hand with a knife. Another officer then fires multiple shots, killing him.
Officials note that the officer believed “the municipal police force was in danger due to the presence of the knife,” but investigators currently rule out self-defense. The officer is under judicial supervision and could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted, with authorities reserving the right to appeal the supervision decision.
An autopsy reveals the victim dies from internal thoracic bleeding caused by three gunshot wounds to the left shoulder blade and one to the right biceps.
The investigation continues to clarify the circumstances of the intervention and review the victim’s mental health history. Prosecutors note he lived alone and had no prior police record.
