Trump Defends U.S. Strike on Iran
"If we didn't hit within two weeks, they would have had a nuclear weapon," Trump said during remarks at an event at the White House.
He made clear the stakes extended far beyond regional politics.
"And when crazy people have nuclear weapons, bad things happen," he added.
Trump insisted the timing of the strike was driven by the need to pre-empt an imminent Iranian move against Israel, framing the offensive as a defensive act.
"I think if we didn't do it first, they would have done it to Israel and give us a shot, if that was possible," he said.
The US president also revisited last June's American strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure, doubling down on prior assertions that the bombardment had crippled Tehran's atomic ambitions.
"It was a complete obliteration of their nuclear potential, and that set them back very, very seriously," he said.
Trump then pointed to the rapid elimination of Iranian leadership figures as further evidence of the campaign's reach.
"Their leadership is just rapidly going. Everybody that seems to want to be a leader, they end up dead," he added.
The remarks came amid sharply deteriorating regional conditions. US and Israeli forces launched a large-scale assault on Iran last Saturday, killing more than 900 people — among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military commanders. Iran has since retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes directed at Israel and at Gulf states hosting US military installations.
