Xi Extends Invitation to Taiwanese Opposition Leader Cheng Li-wun
Cheng, head of the Kuomintang (KMT) party, is scheduled to visit China from April 7 to 12, according to announcements from Beijing.
Officials in Beijing noted that Cheng has expressed interest in visiting the “mainland” on several occasions since assuming office. The invitation is intended to strengthen ties between the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and the KMT and to support the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
Following the announcement, Cheng said she had “gladly accepted” the invitation, emphasizing that the trip would demonstrate that the two sides “are not destined for war,” as reported by Taiwan-based media.
She added, “We must firmly pursue a path of peace for the sake of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, regional stability, and the well-being of future generations,” speaking at KMT headquarters in Taipei.
Cheng also expressed gratitude to Xi for the invitation and stressed that efforts to enhance cross-strait relations during her visit must adhere to the “1992 consensus” and maintain opposition to “Taiwan independence.”
