UN Warns of Systematic Israeli Pressure in West Bank
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said at a press briefing that “airstrikes and shelling hit residential areas in Gaza, as well as a fatal shooting by Israeli forces and other attacks by settlers in the West Bank” over the weekend.
He also noted an early Monday incident in the southern West Bank, where Israeli forces set fire to two vehicles, which neighbors managed to extinguish, saving the family inside. “Such incidents have become frequent, and they put systematic pressure on Palestinians to leave their homes and their communities,” Dujarric emphasized.
The spokesperson warned that these attacks cause fatalities, injuries, property damage, and displacement, intensifying humanitarian needs. “Perpetrators of these unlawful attacks must be held to account,” he added.
Recent weeks have seen a spike in violence in the West Bank, with eight Palestinians reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire since late February. Around 750,000 Israeli settlers reside across West Bank settlements, including roughly 250,000 in East Jerusalem, frequently carrying out attacks that rights groups say aim to forcibly displace Palestinians.
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, violent incidents—including killings, demolitions, displacement, and settlement expansion—have intensified, resulting in at least 1,136 Palestinian deaths, over 11,700 injuries, and approximately 22,000 arrests, according to Palestinian authorities.
Dujarric also voiced concern over Israeli restrictions on UN humanitarian operations in the region.
