Guterres Denounces Killing of Indonesian Peacekeeper in Lebanon

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly denounced the killing of an Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) during clashes between Israel and Hezbollah late Sunday.

Speaking on the US social media platform X, he said, "This is just one of a number of recent incidents that have jeopardized the safety & security of peacekeepers." He urged all parties to respect international law and to safeguard UN personnel and facilities.

According to reports, UNIFIL confirmed that the peacekeeper was "tragically" killed Sunday when a projectile exploded at a UNIFIL position near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr, while another peacekeeper sustained critical injuries. The mission stated that the source of the projectile remains unknown and that "We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances."

The attack comes as Israel has intensified military operations in southern Lebanon following a cross-border strike by the Hezbollah on March 2.

The region has been on high alert since the United States and Israel began an air campaign against Iran on Feb. 28. Reports indicate the conflict has claimed over 1,340 lives, including Ali Khamenei.

In retaliation, Iran has conducted drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as US-linked locations in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries, resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and broader disruptions to global markets and air travel.
