Laos Issues Nationwide Weather Alert Over Heat, Hailstorm Risks
Officials have warned that some regions could experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, with a particularly high risk of hail in specific locations.
The warning comes after a recent hailstorm struck the Sikhottabong district in the Lao capital of Vientiane, inflicting extensive damage across 17 villages. The storm affected 5,490 homes, five schools, two temples, a village office, a health center, and a vaccine production facility.
Additionally, 53 vehicles were damaged and nine people were injured.
In response, the Central Disaster Management Committee, together with government ministries, private sector organizations, and local communities, has been delivering critical aid to affected households. Efforts are focused on easing hardships, supporting recovery, and providing relief to those impacted.
On March 27, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith visited the hardest-hit areas, offering financial support and essential household supplies to residents. He also suggested that electricity and water bills for affected families be suspended for three months to alleviate their financial burdens.
